Have your say on traffic calming

CIVIC chiefs are urging members of the public to have their say when they discuss making changes to traffic calming regulations.

The possibility of introducing 20mph speed zones could replace existing traffic calming measures in residential areas in Hartlepool will be the main focus of an investigation starting next week.

Hartlepool Borough Council's Neighbourhood Services Scrutiny Forum will examine the issue in a six-month inquiry.

The local authority currently uses a variety of traffic calming measures on its roads including speed humps, pedestrian islands, motion-activated speed warning signs and speed cameras.

However, since the end of last year, national guidance from the Department for Transport has recommended 20mph speed limits for all predominantly residential roads and in town streets where there are large numbers of pedestrians and cyclists but which are not part of any major traffic route.

The forum will examine how traffic calming is currently carried out in Hartlepool and compare it with other areas of the country.

It will also explore alternative methods of traffic calming, including 20mph zones, and look at how the major financial pressures which the council faces will affect its approach to traffic calming measures in the future.

The forum will also seek a range of views, including from members of the public and from organisations including the AA, the Cleveland Casualty Reduction Group, the emergency services, the Institute of Advanced Motorists and campaign group 20's Plenty For Us.

Councillor Stephen Thomas, chair of the neighbourhood services scrutiny forum, said: "It's important that we thoroughly examine the issue of traffic calming in Hartlepool so that we can make realistic recommendations for the future."

The forum will hold its first meeting on Wednesday, August 4, at 4.30pm in Committee Room B in Civic Centre in Victoria Road and members of the public are welcome to attend.
