Help offer insights into past

A DROP-in roadshow is being held to give people a further opportunity to contribute family photographs and documents of bygone Hartlepool to an online community archive.

Launched last year, the ‘Hartlepool History – Then and Now’ project has created a website featuring a personal record of the life and times of the town and its people over the decades.

The Heritage Lottery-funded initiative is led by the Nautical Archaeological Society North-East in partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council’s Library and Museum Services together with local groups and volunteers including the Family History Society, the World Ship Society and the Photographic & Digital Image Club.

Project manager Gary Green said: “We had an excellent response to our previous roadshows and so far we have put over 1,400 photographs on the website, but we’re still very keen to hear from people who want to contribute.

“We would welcome photographs which show everyday life and scenes in Hartlepool and the surrounding villages, such as Graythorp, Seaton and Elwick – the older the image, the better.

“We’re interested in everything from routine events in the town and on the surrounding farms through to special celebrations plus incidents such as the great storm of 1953.

“We’re also keen for people to share with us personal documents which add to our knowledge of people’s lives and careers, such as diaries, log books, professional certificates and indentures.”

The roadshow is on Tuesday, February 12, in the Headland Library in Middlegate from 10am-12.30pm.

Photographs, albums and documents will be copied while people wait.

For more information, contact Gary on 07752 215633 or Diane Marlborough, Hartlepool reference librarian, on (01429) 242909.
