Helping to pass on vital skills

AN entrepreneur has revealed her latest venture which comes just weeks after she reached the finals of a Mail-backed challenge.

Jill Dennis, 50, the runner-up in the Hartlepool Mail's If we can, you can Challenge, is using her expertise to train other people in her neighbourhood.

Working in conjunction with Hartlepool Borough Council, Jill is organising regular workshops to teach people the hands-on skills needed for manufacturing jobs.

She has started the campaign because of her own experiences in business.

She has been involved in the production industry for 20 years and now wants to use a UK supplier for her own business called Molliecoddle, which designs bespoke wheelchair covers.

But when she searched for a cost-effective producer based in the UK, she found there was a shortage of companies that offered the skilled labour she required.

Jill has decided to dedicate her spare time to ensure these skills are not lost by developing workshops that teach the fundamentals to willing volunteers in her native North East.

She said: "It is early stages but if I can work with the council to develop this programme it may not only help me to move ahead with my own business but also ensure critical skills remain embedded in the region."

Jill was runner-up in this year's challenge to Barbara Chrisp, 42, who offers a fruit and vegetable delivery scheme called Cabbage Patch covering villages and towns in east Durham.

The If we can, you can challenge aims to unearth new entrepreneurial talent in the region.
