Here we go - on a fundraising walk
SIX Hartlepool United supporters are planning to walk 300 miles to a league fixture at Brentford next month. They hope to raise enough money to buy a bus for Hartlepool United Disabled Supporters' Association (HUDSA).
The feat mirrors a similar achievement last year by a group of Brentford supporters who walked to see a Hartlepool United fixture.
Lifelong Pools supporter Paul Fryer, 36, who works as a quantity surveyor for Lorne Stewart, said: "We got the inspiration for this idea from Brentford supporters who walked to a fixture from Brentford last year to raise money for their club, which was in financial difficulties at the time."
Paul and his friend Chris Fengelow, 22, a student at Newcastle University, approached HUDSA who said they needed a bus.
Paul said: "I kept up to date with the progress of the Brentford supporters last year and we kept in touch.
"When we knew a return fixture would happen and that HUDSA needed a bus with wheelchair access our minds were made up."
There are to be four further walkers together with Chris and Paul, including Suzanne Pearce, Pat Sprintall and Andy Veal, with one to confirm and Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond offering himself as a reserve walker.
The walk will start on April 22 with the aim of arriving in Brentford on the day of the fixture, Saturday, April 29, where they are scheduled to be joined by last year's Brentford walkers for the final few miles.
Chairman of HUDSA Neil Appleyard, of Ventnor Avenue, Hartlepool, said: "We are absolutely delighted that these supporters have chosen to do this, we badly need a bus to get us to away matches.
"I have spinal problems, otherwise I would be joining them on the walk myself.
We put the details on the Hartlepool United website and have already received 200 in donations and Quest Identity have committed to providing the walkers with their clothing for free.
"All this and we haven't even properly publicised it yet."
