HUNDREDS of customers and staff were evacuated from a shopping centre after a fault on a fire alarm system.
Crews from Stranton Fire Brigade were called to Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, in Hartlepool, after an “apparatus fault” at 12.20pm today.
Hoards of people could be seen leaving the centre while firefighters went into the centre to check the equipment.
About 20 minutes later staff were allowed back into the complex.
A spokeswoman for Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “We were called to Middleton Grange Shopping Centre to an apparatus fault.”
Police say centre bosses were hoping to allow customers back inside shortly.
