Hundreds on dole as Garlands collapses
HUNDREDS of call centre workers in Hartlepool were searching for work today after they were axed following the collapse of Garlands.
Some 621 workers were given the devastating news that the firm was in administration at the Marina headquarters – with a further 537 delivered the blow at other sites in South Shields and Middlesbrough.
Distraught owner Chey Garland blamed the collapse on being unable to compete with cut-price Asian markets and revealed the firm had been battling to stay afloat for some 18 months.
As stunned workers woke today to start life on the dole, town MP Iain Wright vowed to do all he could to try to find them jobs.
