Icy warning for motorists

THE snow appears to have let up in Hartlepool and East Durham - but don’t pack away those wellies just yet.

A warning remains in place for motorists to show caution when travelling, as the road network is covered in slush and temperatures will remain around freezing in the early hours so black ice could be a possibility.

The Hartlepool Mail circulation area seems to have seen no more of the white stuff falling today - but Hartlepool looks set for a light dusting on Tuesday.

Yesterday saw Hartlepool United’s home game against Colchester United called off due to the inclement weather, and various Saturday and Sunday League town fixtures were also wiped out because of the snow.

But the back end of the week looks more promising and clear of snow.

Met Office experts predict there will be cloud on Wednesday and sunny intervals on Thursday.

Temperatures will remain low, with highs on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of 3C and lows on Monday of -2C and -1C on Thursday.

Although snow is disappearing, ice remains on the roads and police are urging drivers to be prepared and to allow extra time for their journeys.

Hartlepool is set for heavy rain tomorrow and 24mph winds from the south-east, though orange snow warnings are still being issued.

Meanwhile a similar forecast is predicted for Peterlee throughout the week.

Monday will see sleet showers, with highs of 2C and lows of -2C, while Tuesday will see light rain, and temperatures varying between 1C and 2C.

On Wednesday in East Durham, there will be cloud and dipping between 3C and -1C, while sunny intervals are predicted for Thursday and temperatures varying between 2C and -3C.`
