Identity change: John Darwin's new passport

THIS is the photograph on back-from-the dead John Darwin's latest passport.

Sporting a lengthy beard, he looks completely different to the beardless but dishevelled man arrested by police nearly a week ago.

The photograph has been issued today as detectives appealed for help to trace his movements since his apparent death in March 2002.

Det Supt Tony Hutchinson, speaking at a press conference, said: "We need to know if anyone has seen John Darwin in the UK after his apparant death.

"The photograph shows him with a beard. People may have seen him when he looked like this.

Darwin, 57, formerly of The Cliff, Seaton Carew, was earlier today remanded in custody by town magistrates after he was charged with fraud and making an untrue statement to procure a passport.

His wife, Anne, 55, is being questioned by police in connection with his disappearance in 2002 after a supposed canoeing accident near his home.

Det Supt Hutchinson added: "This picture was on his passport.

"They may have known him as John Jones. We need to know where both Mr and Mrs Darwin have been both in Europe and North and South America.

"We need to know what they have been saying. We need to know who they have been with and we need to know what they have been doing."
