A MASSACRE victim’s son says news that the inquests into his relatives’ deaths are just a month away will play a small part in helping him move on.

Inquests into the Horden gun massacre that saw taxi driver Michael Atherton shoot three members of his family before turning the gun on himself will take place on March 4.

The 42-year-old carried out the shootings in Horden on New Year’s Day last year.

Before turning a gun on himself, he shot dead his partner Susan McGoldrick, 47, her sister Alison Turnbull, 44, and Alison’s daughter, Tanya Turnbull, 24.

The inquests into all four deaths will be held during the hearing that is expected to last up to two weeks.

Bobby Turnbull, 24, son of Alison and brother of Tanya, said: “I know it will never end, but knowing I’m getting towards the end of all the meetings might help me with closure and to start moving on.

“Although I know the pain will never end, hopefully we will get closer to receiving answers.”

The Mail told last week how Bobby was due to travel to London to lobby Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper in his campaign for stricter gun laws.

Bobby, of Blackhall, and his uncle, Norman Hardman, were due to see Ms Cooper today accompanied by the Mail’s Tracy Walker.

Ms Cooper said: “I wanted to meet with Bobby Turnbull about his campaign because gun control is hugely important.

“Our country has some of the toughest gun control laws in the world, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be improved.

“And the Government should respond when things go wrong.

“It is time to talk seriously about a range of ideas which could improve people’s safety, including Bobby Turnbull’s important campaign.”
