Irish eyes smiling at Pools!

HARTLEPOOL United's Irish contingent were left green-eyed after taking time out to celebrate St Patrick's Day.

Players Joe Gamble, Alan Power, Denis Behan and Colin Larkin marked St Patrick's Day at Hartlepool's Park Inn pub with some good craic.

The quartet are four of six Irish players at Pools, with Leon McSweeney and Roy O'Donovan making up the group from the Emerald Isle at Victoria Park.

But while their compatriots enjoyed their traditional knees-up, there was no chance of spending the day throwing back a few pints of Guinness for the Pools lads as they were training today in preparation for Friday night's trip to Tranmere Rovers.

Larkin, 27, said: "I'll just laze around this afternoon after getting back from training.

"But there'll be none of this drinking all day stuff!"

Behan might be able to indulge with a pint of Guinness though, with the striker on crutches after injuring his ankle last week.

"I might be able to have a Guinness, but not too many!" said the 26-year-old.

"The wife is over so she might want to go out for a while."

The players popped into the Park Inn to meet musician Sticks McLoughlin from Irish group Streams of Whiskey, who are performing at the Park Road pub on Saturday night from 9.30pm.

There will be plenty of Irish-themed entertainment at the pub tonight too with 1 off pints of Guinness.
