MOTORISTS are being warned that a busy junction will be closed to traffic for six weeks while improvements are carried out.
The junction of Elwick Road and Catcote Road, in Hartlepool, will be closed from Monday, January 13, while work is carried to boost the flow of traffic.
The closure will enable the junction to be widened as part of the Tees Valley Bus Improvements Scheme and will also include the installation of pedestrian crossing islands at the junction, plus some landscaping.
Catcote Road will remain open for two-way traffic, but access from Catcote Road to Elwick Road will be via a diversion along Park Road and Queensberry Avenue.
Normal pedestrian and resident access will be maintained.
The £100,000 project is being funded with Government money via the Tees Valley Bus Network Improvement Fund and Hartlepool Borough Council’s Local Transport Plan.
Brendon Colarossi, senior projects officer in the council’s highways section, said: “These important improvements are part of a wider ongoing programme to improve the bus network across the town and also to improve access for pedestrians.
“We are doing our very best to minimise disruption to drivers while the work is being carried out but we apologise for any inconvenience which it may cause.”
Work on the project, agreed by Mayor Drummond at a council meeting at the end of last year, will see Catcote Road widened to create a right turn lane for motorists travelling north to prevent traffic from building up behind vehicles waiting to turn into Elwick Road.
A similar scheme has been agreed for Elwick Road at the same junction for vehicles turning right onto Catcote Road.
It is aimed it will improve traffic flow on the road that is used by the Stagecoach service 3 bus.
The Stagecoach service 3 experiences delays in both directions that the service runs, northbound on Catcote Road, and westbound on Elwick Road.
