Killer dog breed spotted in town

A KILLER breed of dog has been spotted in town - but officials say they are not cause for concern.

Pit bull terriers, like the one pictured, have again been brought into the spotlight after a five-year-old girl was killed by a type of the breed.

Little Ellie Lawrenson died of severe head and neck injuries after being mauled at her grandmother’s house in Merseyside in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Today Hartlepool Borough Council revealed that there have been a couple spotted in town, but say they are currently not a cause for concern.

A council spokesman said: “Over the last few years we have seen a couple of pit bulls in Hartlepool and they were correctly muzzled, leashed, tagged and under control.

“We are not aware of any problems with pit bulls in the town.”

The breed was first brought to public attention after a series of attacks on people in the early 1990s.

This led to the Dangerous Dogs Act which banned the breeding and sale or exchange of four kinds of dog - pit bull terriers, Japanese tosas, the dogo Argentinos, and the fila Brasileiros.

The act also states that anyone who owns a “type of dog known as a pit bull terrier” must have it neutered, and keep it muzzled and on a lead in public.
