Lifeboat visitor on return trip

A PENSIONER and his motorhome are on a journey with a difference - calling in to meet lifeboat crews around Britain.

Ron Bullen, 76, spent time with the crews at Hartlepool as part of his tour of every lifeboat station in the UK to raise the profile of the RNLI.

The pensioner was retracing his steps of a mammoth journey 16 years ago when he covered the 7,047-mile journey on foot.

The gruelling 313-day task, which saw him fighting for his life after being struck by hypothermia in Scotland, gained him an entry in the Guinness Book of Records.

Now Ron, a grandfather-of-seven, is visiting 84 all weather stations and 60 inshore stations as part of his trip. He said: "I am duplicating what I did last time, but this time I am taking the easy option of driving.

''It is bringing back some good memories and a lot of bad ones of when I did the walk, which was hard, but I lived to tell the tale."

Ron said he has had a good response from everyone at the lifeboat stations and was particularly impressed with Hartlepool.

He said: "They treated me like a king at Hartlepool, it was really good to be there."

Born in Wales, Ron now enjoys life on the open road in his motorhome and says he is thankful he is still fit enough to do the journey on behalf of the RNLI.
