St Joseph’s Primary School, in Musgrave Street, received a grant from the Edina Trust to hold the week of events.

The children were left “wowed” after the money was used to buy a variety of resources, with the week starting with a visit from ‘Professor Brainstorm’.

Tracy O’Shea, the school’s science co-ordinator, said: “We focused on experiences which would wow the children.

“Professor Brainstorm treated us to his Magical Science show, while for Years 5 and 6, there was the Exploding show.

“It was a wonderful experience for all of the staff and children, and provided a good starting point for the week ahead.

“During the remainder of the week, children undertook different experiments, and cross-curricular links were made.

“Maths skills were used when recording results, and writing skills to recount events, write instructions or explanations.”

Each class in the school took part in a series of science investigations during the week.

It all helped to create a “buzz” before parents were invited in to see what the children had been up to.

Mrs O’Shea added: “Parents also had the opportunity to come into school for an afternoon and work alongside their child on a science investigation.

“At the end of the week, we had a science fair, where each class demonstrated their experiments to parents and grandparents, and amazed them with their understanding and knowledge.

“Our aim was to raise the profile of science within the school, and that was certainly achieved.

“For the entire week, the school had a buzz about it and children were talking about science, sharing their experiences with others.”
