Make use of your old shoes

A SHOE store is urging people to do their bit for the environment by asking them to donate their old shoes.

Wynsors World of Shoes, in Marina Way, Hartlepool, is collecting shoes to send to India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Chile and several African countries where they will be repaired and sold at affordable prices.

The initiative, which has been running for 11 years, helps people in developing countries to afford shoes, as well as reducing the amount of waste in landfill sites.

Wynsors' managing director Mark Richardson said: "Our shoe recycling scheme offers to benefit to everyone involved. Local craftsmen can repair and refurbish the shoes and earn a living from this trade, while those who couldn't normally afford to buy such shoes, or any at all, now can. Even the tattiest of shoes can be put to good use.

"For us, the benefit is that tonnes of otherwise non-biodegradable waste won't end up in landfill sites."

Shoes can be dropped off at recycling collection points situated near the store entrance.
