Making and sticking to New Year resolutions

WHETHER they last a day or a year, making resolutions is usually most people's favourite way to see in the new year.

The Mail spoke to the people of Hartlepool and east Durham to see what 2008 has in store for them.

Amanda Lowery, 31, a carer from the Owton Manor area, hopes to keep the weight off by hitting the gym.

"I was a size 22 and got down to a size 14. I want to get fit and lose weight again. I hope it will be easier this time," she said.

And another goal of hers is to have a baby in 2008.

Amanda added: "I'd love to have a baby. I've been trying for a while."

Spencer Summers, who runs The Sweet Barrow stall in Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, wants to ward off sugary treats.

"I want to stop eating sweets. I don't smoke and I don't drink so there's not much else to give up," he said.

Spencer, 26, who is originally from Norwich but now lives in Durham, also wants to see his beloved football team return to top form.

He said: "I want to see Norwich City go back up. They're not playing top-flight football at the minute."

Eileen O'Connor, 62, says her New Year's resolution is "to take more holidays".

Eileen and her husband Alan had never flown until this year, when their friends persuaded the couple to join them on a holiday to Benidorm.

She plans to return to the Spanish resort in September.

The retired grandmother from Owton Manor said: "It was the first time I flew and it was fantastic, we'd always gone to Butlins before. I plan to enjoy life more. You don't have long and you don't know what's round the corner."

June Flanagan, 71, also from the Owton Manor area, will also be flying to Benidorm, to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary with her husband James.

June, who has 23 grandchildren, said: "We plan to take more holidays and it would also be nice to win the lottery."

Norman Carr, 37, a warehouseman from Peterlee, says his New Year's resolution is to "drink less".

But Norman, a father-of-three, admits: "I never stick to them. They last for a day, if that, maybe a week."

He added: "The thing I would like to see most in 2008 is mortgages going down."

His wife Lisa, an accounts assistant, said: "I hope to keep the weight off. Whether it happens, I don't know.

"I also want to try not to be as grumpy with the children and be a bit more calm and to try to be thankful for what we've got.

"I want to be happy and healthy, that's all I want."
