Man urinated on chemist's window

A MAN urinated against a chemist window after being asked to leave the premises for being drunk.

Philip Sumpter was in Lloyds Pharmacy, in Park Road, Hartlepool, when staff called police as they believed him to be drunk, justices were told.

Police arrived and as the 46-year-old left the chemists, he said he needed the toilet.

But as officers were about to tell him that they would find him a toilet, he unzipped his jeans and urinated on the glass window pane of the chemist.

Prosecuting, Lilian Atkinson told Hartlepool Magistrates' Court: "Police received a report that this defendant was refusing to leave the consultation room within Lloyds Pharmacy.

"Officers asked him to leave numerous times and he eventually stepped outside onto Park Road.

"He said at the time that he needed the toilet.

"Officers began to explain about the nearest toilet facilities, but he refused to wait and unzipped his jeans and began to urinate on the lower glass window pane of Lloyds Pharmacy."

Sumpter, formerly of Kimberley Street, in Hartlepool, but now of Victoria Road, in Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly on October 15.

Mitigating, Stuart Haywood, said: "You may feel that this was a deliberate act and in defiance of police at the time.

"It certainly wasn't. We all have urges and needs and the police weren't helpful in their manner and understanding of his needs.

"He was extremely desperate to say the least. If he'd have been allowed to go to the toilet there wouldn't have been a problem."

He added: "He's had a number of difficult months.

"His brother has unfortunately passed away and that coupled with the backdrop of former heartache has certainly led to him

having a difficult time of late.

"Alcohol has become a fairly significant problem for Mr Sumpter."

Chairman of the bench

Lynn Gibson fined Sumpter 45, ordered him to pay 40 costs and a 15 victim surcharge.
