Meet the super hero who saved his gran's life

THREE-YEAR-OLD Bradley Matthews saved the life of his great-grandma by copying the actions of his favourite Power Ranger comic character.

Bradley turned superhero after Ann Burdiss, 70, collapsed at her Hartlepool home and had laid on the kitchen floor for almost an hour before the youngster came to her rescue.

Young Bradley saved the day after he was dropped off at the door of her home by his nana Angela Waddington and found his great-grandmother, who he calls grandma, laid on the floor.

The Sacred Heart Nursery School pupil first tried to rouse her, before he tried to pick her up by mimicking his favourite TV character "Red Power Ranger".

Then after the telephone rang, he told his mum's auntie, Joanne Burdiss, on the other end of the line: "My grandma is poorly and she's on the floor."

Joanne, who co-owns Jo Els hair salon in Mulgrave Road, Hartlepool, rushed to the house at around 11.30am on Saturday and called paramedics who took her mum to the University Hospital of Hartlepool, where she was kept in for two days.

Medics have dubbed Bradley as a hero and say "his prompt action made a huge difference".

Mum-of-four Ann, who also has eight grandchildren, said she first felt sick and then collapsed after suffering complications linked to a chest infection.

She said: "I really thought it was my last day and I was on the way out. I feel like he's saved my life and I don't know what could have happened if he hadn't come in.

"Everyone in hospital has been calling him a little hero. They said the longer you are out the worse it is for you. He told the staff that he was being Red Power Ranger and was picking me up."

Bradley's mum, Kirby Waddington, 22, and dad Mark Matthews, 26, who works in metal fabrication, are delighted with their son's actions.

Full-time mum Kirby, who lives in the Throston area of Hartlepool, said: "I'm over the moon about what he's done and I'm really proud of him.

"I had a lump in my throat when they told me what he'd done. And his dad is over the moon that he answered the phone and helped his grandma."

Sister Shirley Garthwaite, from Ward 7 where Ann was cared for at the University Hospital of Hartlepool, said: "We're full of praise for young Bradley. What a hero!

"His prompt action has made a huge difference. We wish Mrs Burdiss a speedy recovery."
