Men get in on the act!

THE show will go on for fair ladies who were on the lookout for men.

The Hartlepool Stage Society appeared in the Mail in November appealing for men to fill several roles in its production of My Fair Lady.

It was feared that the performance might not go ahead as the society was struggling to attract male members for a number of parts in the family favourite.

The group was often forced to do old-fashioned shows with more female parts which were not as popular with audiences and even approached other societies for help, but they were committed to their own productions.

But now the roles of Henry Higgins, Alfred Dolittle, Professor Pickering and Freddie Eynsford-Hill have been filled by men who rushed to the society’s aid.

Jill Jackson, society chairwoman and choreographer, said: “Four men - Ken Lupton, Gary Dring, Declan Cahill and Nason Crone - came forward and three of those did so after seeing our appeal in the Mail. We also have another eight in the chorus.

“We couldn’t have done the show if we didn’t have the men. The parts are so pronounced as being upper-class men and we wouldn’t have got away with it.”

And 17-year-old Nason Crone, who plays Freddie Eynsford-Hill, said he was happy to step in to help.

The east Durham and Houghall college student, who is studying performing arts, said: “It’s pretty interesting to play Eynsford-Hill - he’s a sweet guy and quite posh, which is hard to do with my Leeds accent.”

Performances of My Fair Lady take place from Tuesday, April 24, until Saturday, April 28, at 7pm, at the Town Hall Theatre in Hartlepool.

Tickets are available from the box office at Hartlepool Art Gallery, Church Square.
