Mixed fortunes for Mr Universe hopefuls

TWO iron-pumping bodybuilders have experienced mixed fortunes in the build up to a worldwide event.

Ian Porritt and Steve Wright were both ecstatic after booking their place to mix it with the very best at the Mr Universe competition in Southport.

But whereas Ian has overcome a few minor hiccups to get himself in shape to take his place in the contest next week, it was devastation for Steve who was forced to withdraw after being unable to shake off a shoulder injury.

Steve, 39, who lives in Gillpark Grove, in Seaton Carew with his wife, Paula, and two children, Daniel, 18, and Katie, 14, said it was hard to come to terms with not competing after all of the training - but is already focused on his next event and completing his recovery.

Steve, who works away as a pipe welder, said: "I was suffering from inflammation on one of the tendons in my shoulder.

"It is a wear-and-tear injury but about eight weeks ago I was forced to pull out.

"It is on the mend now and I am just focused on being fit and ready to go for the Mr Britain competition next year.

"I am not going to go and watch the competition, it is too frustrating when you can't compete, but I have wished Ian best of luck."

Despite being fit to compete next week, it hasn't been all plain sailing for Ian either.

But the 41-year old is hoping problems caused by a niggling back injury are behind him, and says he feels in better condition every day.

Ian, who lives in Elwick Road and works as a steel manufacturer for Expamet in Hartlepool, said: "I had a few problems with the discs in my back which was affecting my training.

"I did lose quite a bit of size but preparations are going well again now."

Ian, who lives with wife, Julie, and 11-year old son, Ethan, qualified for the Mr Universe competition after finishing sixth in his category at this years Mr Britain competition and is looking forward to stepping up to the next level.

Ian added: "I would love to be placed at the Mr Universe competition, but regardless, it is going to be brilliant experience for me.

"I will take the carbohydrates out of my diet at the back end of the week, carry on the cardio training every day, and hopefully I will be at my best."
