More post offices face closure

THREE East Durham post offices face permanent closure as part of a cost-cutting exercise, the Mail can reveal.

Easington Colliery Post Office on Lower Seaside Lane, Easington Colliery, and Salters Lane Post Office in Shotton Colliery could close, bosses have confirmed.

And Yoden Road Post Office in Peterlee, which has been temporarily closed for 12 months, could also be closed for good.

A six-week consultation process was yesterday launched in County Durham to see if these and other post offices across the county could be closed.

Judith Donovan, chair of customer watchdog Postwatch North, said: "Post office closures are not good news for customers, but the Government has decided that a significant number are necessary to help put in place a sustainable network for the long-term.

Customers can find out further information on Post Office Ltd's proposals at www.postoffice.co.uk/networkchange, by emailing consultation@postoffice.co.uk or calling 08457 22 33 44.
