Motorist airlifted to hospital
The Great North Air Ambulance lands on the A19 to rush a seriously injured motorist to hospital
A MOTORIST was flown to hospital with serious injuries after a three car smash on a busy dual-carriageway.
The 53-year-old man was taken by the Great North Air Ambulance for treatment after two Audi A4s and a Toyota Aygo collided on the A19.
One of the northbound lanes was blocked near the A179 turnoff, on the outskirts of Hartlepool, after the crash at around 9.15am yesterday.
Police then briefly closed the road for the helicopter to land, causing long tailbacks as traffic was diverted.
A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: “The man was taken to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, with a suspected neck injury. His condition is described as serious but not life threatening.
“The road was closed briefly for the air ambulance to land.”
A spokesman for the GNAA added: “He was treated at scene by the air ambulance doctor. We wish him a speedy recovery.”
