Mum's praise for retiring head teacher

THE MUM of a boy who has spent his early years suffering from numerous illnesses has praised his retiring head teacher for the fantastic role she has played over recent years.

Brave Kieran Smith is just 11 years old and suffers from an obstructive lung disease, has a congenital heart defect and has hearing and speech difficulties.

The football-mad Hartlepool youngster is also forced to live on a cinnamon and benzoic acid free diet due to a recurrent oral ulcer and suffers from panic attacks believing that things such as tall buildings can fall on him.

But the illnesses have not held back Kieran and after fighting hard to get him into a mainstream school, his mum, Angela Jefferies has paid tribute to the excellent work of his teadteacher at Lynnfield Primary School, Joy Lowe.

As reported in Saturday's Mail, Mrs Lowe retired when the term ended last week after 20 years in the role.

Angela, who lives with husband Ian - who is Kieran's step-dad - in Hartlepool's Raby Road, said: "I can't praise the work of Joy enough.

"She has brought Kieran on leaps and bounds, she has just been brilliant.

"She is just so soft-spoken and approachable and listens to everything you have to say, nothing is a problem to her."

Angela added: "Kieran has been able to do everything within the mainstream, he does tire a little quicker than the other children, but the children and the staff at the school have all been excellent, and I can't thank Joy enough."

Angela also praised Joy for her role with Kieran's older brother Dylan.

Dylan, 12, suffers with ADHD and dyspraxia and after spending most of his early school years in Springwell Primary School, he was integrated back into Lynnfield by Joy and is now excelling at Dyke House.

Mrs Lowe praised the attitude of both Kieran and Dylan and their supportive family.

Mrs Lowe said: "Kieran is just a lovely young person who strives to do everything. He has been an absolute pleasure to have around and we have named a Year 6 trophy after him.

"And Dylan is doing incredibly well, it is a credit to their fantastic supportive family how well both boys have done and of course credit to the local authorities and Dyke House school."
