New DVD looks back on yesteryear of Hartlepool

The disc titled Yesterday Once More gives viewers a real insight into Hartlepool during the 1950s and 60s as well as featuring photos of the Headland’s bustling The Croft including some from over a 100 years ago.

It is the fifth DVD to be produced in the last few years by the History of Hartlepool group with proceeds going to support care homes in town that support people with dementia.

Group members Roger Codner and Stephen Close created it from old photos and film donated by members of the Facebook group History of Hartlepool in Images and others.

Roger said: “The DVD has three chapters with associated photo slide shows and the rest are movie chapters.

“One chapter is titled Then and Now featuring a number of images by Andy Booth where he has merged the image from a past period of time with the modern day image.

“Another chapter is called On The Buses featuring donated images by the 500 Group, a group dedicated to preserving Teesside’s transport history, showing buses in various parts of the Hartlepools in the 1960s whereby a lot of the surroundings have either changed considerably or disappeared completely.”

Both chapters are set to popular 1960s music.

The third chapter is a nostalgic look at the bustling The Croft area of streets on the Headland which was demolished in the late 1930s.

Some images of the area date back over a century and the chapter is set to soothing classical music.

The disc also features a number of pieces of film for viewers to enjoy.

Roger added: “The movie chapters are from the 1950s and 1960s, once again set to 1950s and 1960s popular music, and feature The Fishing Industry, Gray’s Shipyard, Ward Jackson Park Show, and other short cine snippets from various years.”

Previous DVDs by the history group have focussed on changes to the appearance of Hartlepool during the 1960s, its shopping areas before Middleton Grange arrived, former pubs and businesses and a special one all about The Bombardment.

The discs have sold in their hundreds with copies sent to ex-pats all over the world.

Yesterday Once More is available now from Just Blinds, in York Road, and is priced £6.
