ART lovers can enjoy a new exhibition from two of Hartlepool’s most respected artists at a popular gallery from this weekend.
Hartlepool Art Gallery, in Christ Church, is hosting the exhibition - which will run from Saturday, January 11 to Saturday, March 15 - and will feature pieces by Robert ‘Bob’ Watson and John Edwin Wigston.
Bob, a former Head of Creative Studies at Hartlepool Sixth Form College, has produced many paintings and large-scale murals for schools, industry and public areas in recent years, including for the English Martyrs and Ward Jackson schools.
He has exhibited in one-man and group exhibitions in galleries throughout the North including the Durham Light Infantry and Viridian galleries and his work is represented in a number of North-East collections.
Meanwhile, John started to seriously pursue art when he took evening classes at Hartlepool College of Art, where Bob Watson was one of his tutors, and he had his first solo exhibition at the Gray Art Gallery in 1970.
All his life he has been fascinated by transport, especially railways and it was therefore natural that transport became the earliest subject of his paintings.
Being involved with HMS Warrior when the ship was being restored in Hartlepool in the 1980s, his marine painting took on more importance and he sailed to New York and back on the Queen Elizabeth II as artist in residence.
His paintings are used by Buckingham Covers for its postal first day covers and his most recent commission was a depiction of the QE2 on her last departure from Southampton for the Suitzer Towing Company.
Clare Irvine, the council’s arts and events manager, said: “Bob and John have both earned considerable reputations for the quality, depth and range of their work and we are privileged to host this joint exhibition of their new pieces.”
The Art Gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10am to 5pm and entry is free while people are also welcome to attend a preview of the exhibition this Friday, January 10 from 7pm to 9pm, when there will be short talks by the two artists.
During the course of the exhibition there will also be a number of free events at the gallery, giving people an opportunity to work with the artists as follows:
