PLANS to convert a closed down pub into a new retail unit and food takeaway are to be decided by councillors after a raft of objections.

Hartlepool Borough Council’s planning committee is meeting today to discuss the proposals for the former Saxon Pub site in Easington Road which would create up to six jobs.

The two-storey pub building is currently boarded up and developers have submitted plans to change the use of the building into retail and a hot food takeaway.

The applicant is Ingleby Barwick Land and Property Developments.

Meanwhile, there is also an outline planning application for the same site to build two retail units to the south of the existing building, which has a large car park attached to it.

If the plans are approved it will be the latest pub in Hartlepool to be either converted or knocked down and turned into shops.

Pubs that are no more in Hartlepool include The Powlett pub, off Powlett Road, which is now a Greggs and Spar, The Shakespeare, in Catcote Road, which was turned into a convenience store, The Pink Domino, in Brierton Lane, which was re-built as frozen food outlet Farm Foods and The Station Hotel, in Station Lane, which was bulldozed and is now a Sainsbury’s.

Plans for the Saxon pub were due to go before councillors on the planning committee today because there has been 14 objections around a range of issues.

They include fears about anti-social behaviour, traffic and litter concerns while others have stated it is “not needed” and that the site should be used for something else.

A planning report said: “Planning permission is sought for the change of use of the existing vacant Saxon Public House to a retail unit and a hot food takeaway and outline planning permission is sought for the erection of two A1 retail units to the southern side of the existing building.

“It is anticipated that the proposal would create the equivalent of six full time jobs. No proposed operators have been indicated for the retail element of the scheme or for the hot food takeaway.”

Councillors were being recommended to approve the plans because officers say in terms of planning policies and material planning considerations it is “acceptable”.

Planning officers have confirmed the proposed change of use does not include any alterations to the outside of the building at this stage so they say it wouldn’t have any impact on the “visual amenity” of the surrounding area.

The council’s planning committee was due to meet this morning at the Civic Centre.
