New sessions to help asylum seekers
ASYLUM seekers and refugees are urged to take advantage of new drop-in sessions to help them fill in vital documents without needing to leave town.
The sessions mean that asylum seekers and refugees living in Hartlepool don't have to travel to the North East Refugee Service, in Middlesbrough, for help in filling out important documents.
As it stands at the moment vouchers are given out to allow them to buy food and other necessities, but they are not handed cash.
Organisers of the drop-in sessions say that makes it impossible for asylum seekers and refugees to travel through to Middlesbrough on public transport.
The weekly sessions restart at St Joseph's Church Hall, in Grange Road, on Monday, January 4, from noon-2pm.
The following week there will be a session on Monday, January 11, from noon-1pm, at the same venue.
The sessions have been organised by staff at the Hartlepool Voluntary Development Agency, (HVDA), based in Victoria Road.
HVDA's community network development officer, Ann Marshall, said: "There are about 50 asylum seekers in Hartlepool at the moment and they are given vouchers each week to allow them to buy necessities.
"The problem is they are not given cash, which means they find it almost impossible to use public transport.
"The North East Refugee Service is based in Middlesbrough and they have to travel through there if they need help dealing with important documents from the Home Office.
"This new support group means they wont have to do that now, and instead they can pop in and see us."
