Opera star is on song for choir
OPERA sensation Russell Watson is coming to Hartlepool to perform in a celebrity concert.
The international star, nicknamed The Voice, will sing alongside Hartlepool Male Voice Choir in their summer show at the Headland's Borough Hall.
His appearance at the concert will mark his first visit to the town, after performing for royalty, prime ministers and the Pope.
The choir decided to stage a star-studded concert every summer after Songs of Praise presenter Aled Jones sang with the choir in their golden jubilee concert last June.
Choir chairman Duncan Graham said: "Everybody enjoyed it so much that we wanted to repeat the experience.
"I spoke to the agency in London and we decided to approach Russell Watson, and he was good enough to say yes."
The concert will take place on Saturday, June 19, at 7.30pm. Tickets are expected to sell out fast when they go on sale at the beginning of next month.
Tenor Russell will perform twice in the concert, once in each half, and will also sing two songs with the choir.
Duncan, 67, added: "He is a big name so it is smashing that he is coming to the town. His fan club have already been in touch asking about tickets.
"I've seen him in concert in Newcastle before and he was fantastic.
"He has got a terrific range and a really good voice. That's why his nickname is The Voice."
Russell has sold millions of records worldwide since finding fame in 1999 when he sang at Manchester United's Old Trafford ground. In recent years he has bounced back from serious health problems, including a brain tumor in 2007.
Tickets, which are priced between 25 and 35, go on sale on Monday, February 1, and will be available from Hartlepool Tourist Information Centre and Art Gallery, in Church Square, or through choir members.
The 60-strong choir is looking for potential new members who could star alongside Russell in the concert.
Rehearsals are held in The Corner Flag club at Hartlepool United on Fridays at 7.30pm.
