Part-time firefighters wanted

APPLICATIONS WANTED: Headland Fire Station manager Steve Patton

APPLICATIONS WANTED: Headland Fire Station manager Steve Patton

PEOPLE in Hartlepool have the chance to find out what it takes to become a part-time firefighter as Cleveland Fire Brigade steps up a recruitment drive.

The brigade is holding a number of open days this month for those who want more information on becoming a part-time firefighter and will be providing assistance in completing applications.

Part-time roles, in which people can earn between £4,800 and £10,000 a year, are being made available to join crews at a number of stations, including the Headland.

The station, in Durham Street, will hold an open day giving people the chance to learn more next Thursday, January 17, from noon-8pm.

Steve Walton, Cleveland Fire Brigade’s district manager, said: “We are looking for people who want to help and protect their local communities.

“We are holding several open days so anyone who is interested in joining the service as a part-time firefighter can get more information and ask us any questions.

“We will also have packs available containing detailed information on the recruitment and selection process.

“As a part-time firefighter, you will be provided with a high level of training and a chance to be part of a professional team.”

Part-time firefighters must live within five minutes of the fire station they are based at and the job involves being available for call outs via a pager.

Lynne Halls, Cleveland Fire Brigade’s head of HR, said: “Firefighting is a job which can be done by anyone who has the right skills and attributes and we encourage women and other people from minority groups to join.

“We currently have 20 female firefighters in the brigade, 18 full-time and two part-time who have integrated well and enjoy their jobs and the challenges it brings.

“Part-time firefighting can be for anyone, it could be the ideal job for a parent who needs flexible working hours, someone with some spare time or is unemployed or even someone in full-time employment.”
