People urged to make a will and help boost Hartlepool & District Hospice funds

The hospice is running Make a Will Month throughout May when local solicitors waive their legal fee so that clients can make a donation.

As well as raising money for a much-valued town charity, Make A Will Month can take pressure off loved ones when someone passes away.

The hospice, based in Wells Avenue, also held an awareness event in Hartlepool town centre where there were several organisations openly talking about death and dying as part of Dying Matters’ Big Conversation week.

There were representatives from Victoria House Funeral Service, Tilly Bailey and Irvine solicitors, the British Humanist Society and members of the hospice team all talking about what choices when you die.

It puts the focus on making plans for your future and not being afraid to discuss your wishes surrounding death.

A hospice spokesman said: “Talking about dying won’t make it happen but it will help you put plans in place, such as writing your Will, making financial plans for your loved ones, funeral plans, thinking about your care and support, should you need it and making your wishes known about organ donation.

“Making a Will gives you the chance to make sure that people you care about do not have extra stress and worry when you die.”

If you die without leaving a will, the law decides who gets what and how much from your estate.

People can also use their will to decide guardians for children or family, reduces the amount of inheritance tax payable on property and gifts.
