Pervert's daughter says 'no child safe'
THE outraged daughter of a convicted paedophile who avoided jail when a police officer turned up late at work has warned "no child is safe".
Disgusted Jayne Berry has bravely spoken of her feelings towards her pervert father David Berry, who amassed a huge collection of vile pictures and videos of children on computers.
Berry, 61, who was once heavily involved in the local community and even stood for election as a councillor, was facing certain jail when he appeared at court for sentence last week.
But as the Mail reported on Thursday, Judge Michael Taylor spared the sex offender jail and instead gave him a community order after a policeman failed to arrive at court on time with examples of the images.
Mum-of-four Jayne, 35, has now launched a petition to get law chiefs to review the lenient sentence and has vowed to take her fight to the highest court in the land.
She told the Mail: "I'm absolutely disgusted. I can't understand why the court didn't ban him from having a computer, and didn't ban him from seeing children.
"He's a convicted paedophile. He shouldn't be anywhere near kids."
Police discovered more than 500 indecent pictures of children and dozens of sickening video clips on six different computers when they raided Berry's home in July 2007.
Jayne contacted police after her son said Berry kept a computer in his attic with files on he wasn't allowed to touch.
She said: "I just knew, that was the sickening thing.
"I didn't know conclusively but I knew inside."
Police took away photos of Jayne as a youngster and of her daughter to see if they matched with any of the indecent images kept by Berry.
In 2005, Jayne stopped him from seeing her kids after her eight-year-old daughter was given a mobile phone by her father with a picture of a topless woman on it.
Following that, Jayne left Hartlepool and has since moved home three times in a bid to keep her children away from him.
She has launched a petition on the website Facebook demanding justice.
Jayne, who lives with partner Michael Mooney, 40, added: "I will go to the High Court if I have to. If it takes me 10 years to fight, I will do it.
"My main concern is he is still wandering the streets, and while he's on the streets no child is safe."
Berry, of Lowthian Road, Hartlepool, was given a three year community order and must complete a sex offender treatment programme after admitting 17 child porn charges dating from June 1999 to July 2007.
The case has gone on to make national headlines and sparked fury from other parents and victims charities.
Jayne added: "I just can't describe how I feel. The man makes me sick.
"I want people to know how much I hate him and how much I want justice."
But prosecutors have said they cannot appeal the sentence.
Gerry Wareham, Cleveland's Chief Crown Prosecutor, said: "Sentencing is a matter for the court, and in any event these types of offences do not allow the prosecution any right of appeal.
"We will be discussing all the issues arising from this case."
SHAMED paedophile David Berry once played a major role in the local community where he came into close contact with children.
At the same time he was building up his sick pictures and videos featuring youngsters, Berry maintained a public-spirited image to the rest of the community.
In 2004 he served as chair of regeneration group Hartlepool Revival.
The organisation was established the previous year to deliver the New Deal for Communities' (NDC) community housing plan in Hartlepool.
Other senior members of the board included Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond, councillor Steve Wallace and Charlie Hughes, chief executive of Endeavour Housing Association.
The group's annual report also revealed that Berry was chairman of the Wharton and Errol Street Residents' Association.
His sickened daughter Jayne Berry, 35, says she attended a Halloween party in 2004 which her pervert father had helped to organise when he mingled with unsuspecting children and their families.
She said: "I'm disgusted when I think about it but he has hung himself by what he has done."
Berry also acted as a neighbourhood stalwart when he attended NDC meetings as a resident representative.
An NDC spokesman said: "David Berry was elected by local residents as a resident representative and member of the Steering Group in October 2002.
"He last attended a meeting in November 2005 and resigned on health grounds in January 2006.
"As a resident representative he was also a member of the Hartlepool Revival board between 2003 and 2005."
In June 2004, Berry put himself up for election to Hartlepool Borough Council as an independent candidate for the town's Grange Ward.
However, he was unsuccessful in his campaign receiving only 254 votes.
