Pews to go under the hammer

TWO dozen pews will go under the hammer as a church gets set for a minor revamp.

After Easter, work will get underway on the installation of under-floor heating and radiators will be moved to make St Hilda’s Church, on the Headland, warmer.

The plans have been set out as church regulars look to make the most of all of the huge building and the Reverend Chris Collison says the interior change-a-round will “enable St Hilda’s Church to be a centre of love and life, a place of transformation in a changing world”.

Eleven years ago the church underwent significant change with the creation of a new hospitality area, where storyboards about St Hilda, the church and the history of Hartlepool were put on display.

The church’s rood screen was moved from the chancel arch to the west end to create more space for worship using a nave altar.

But since then there have been issues with heating the church and using the created “adaptable” space.

After consultation and advice, the Parochial Church Council have now given the church permission to remove the poor quality pews in the nave and replace them with chairs that link to create pews, allowing the same number of people to be accommodated in the church.

Those pews are being auctioned this Saturday at the church’s monthly coffee morning.

A dozen long pews, each over 11ft long, four medium length pews, around 7ft in length and eight short pews, which are about 5ft long, will all go under the hammer.

The pews with the Hartlepool crest on and those created by famous furniture maker Robert “Mousey” Thompson will be kept at the church and won’t be part of the auction.

Rev Collison said: “A number of people in the community have already expressed an interest in purchasing a pew from St Hilda’s to adorn their home, business or garden or for more personal reasons.”

The coffee morning on Saturday will run from 10am-noon with the auction getting underway at around 10.30am.

All pews will have to be collected from the church between April 1 and April 3.

Anyone who is unable to attend the auction can bid in advance, which will then act as a reserve price.
