Plain sailing for business students

STUDENTS are aiming to cash in on a major tourist event this summer after launching their own business.

This summer up to one million visitors and around 70 ships are expected to head to Hartlepool for The Tall Ships Races between August 7 and 10.

Enterprising students at Catcote School Business and Enterprise College have launched their own enterprise business – Catcote Reprographics – which will sell unique mementos of the event.

A team of six students will be producing personalised jigsaw puzzles and mouse mats to sell to visitors during their time in Hartlepool.

They will be trading 14 hours a day in front of the Class A vessels in the Wind Zone at the tall ships village.

The jigsaws and puzzles will be produced while people wait and all of the profits will be pumped back into the school.

The idea was developed from their success at the Make Your Mark Challenge regional finals, held at Nissan.

All the students from the Catcote Road school took part in a design competition to create a corporate image that would link the school and the tall ships.

The logo sums up the students' approach to the task Working Together Achieving Success.

School headteacher Alan Chapman said: "The Tall Ships Races is an exciting event and we are delighted to be a part of it.

"The business idea and model is giving students a real opportunity to see how a business operates first-hand providing an important learning experience for all."

The company's managing director James Dean, 17, added; "Meeting different types of companies and learning how they operate is what interests me and we are looking forward to the event which will allow us to put all of our planning into practice."

The students have received support from Hartlepool Borough Council and David Bavaird, managing director of Scrap Tyre Exchange, and one of the Make Your Mark judges.

Mr Bavaird approached the students offering help, support and guidance to develop the business opportunities throughout the event.

The jigsaws will be on sale for 9 and mouse mats for 7.
