PLANS to form a ‘super council’ combining representatives from seven North-East authorities have taken another step further.
The combined authority would see a statutory body made up of members of Durham, Northumberland, Sunderland, Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside and South Tyneside councils to work on issues such as transport and economic growth.
After some disagreement between parties, a meeting in Durham heard that all groups are now in agreement and want the ‘super council’ rubber-stamped in parliament.
Councillor Simon Henig, chair of the North East Leadership Board, said: “This is a welcome development. We are committed to working together for the area. I hope now the Government will confirm their intention of laying the necessary legislation before Parliament.”
