POLICE have identified a Hartlepool man who died in hospital following a dual carriageway smash.

Daniel William James Thompson, 24, was taken to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, following the crash on the northbound carriageway of the A19 just before the Easington services.

The 24-year-old of Rydal Street, off Elwick Road, Hartlepool, died in the hospital on Thursday morning.

All members of his family have now been informed of his death.

The incident happened at around 12.30am on Friday, March 7, and involved a silver Peugeot 206 car being driven by the tragic town man who was the only person in the vehicle at the time.

Police say the vehicle left the road to the nearside and collided with a lamppost.

Two fire engines from Peterlee Fire Station were sent to the incident and crew members had to cut the man from the wreckage.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance in a critical, but stable condition and with life-threatening injuries.

The smash saw the carriageway closed for four hours.

Officers from Durham Constabulary are still appealing for witnesses to the crash who have not yet spoken to police to come forward and ring 101 quoting the reference number DHM-07032014-0007.
