Pubs may open for 96 hours
PUBS and clubs could be opening for longer this summer to cash in on the Tall Ships Races.
Council officers are urging licensees to consider whether they want to extend their hours during the major tourist event.
To do so, they must apply to Hartlepool Borough Council for a temporary event notice, which allows them to open for up to 96 hours in one go for a 21 fee.
The temporary event notices are not new, but council chiefs are making licensees aware of them to avoid a late rush of applications.
Ian Harrison, the council's principal licensing officer, was speaking at a meeting of the Hartlepool Licensees Association/Pubwatch on Wednesday.
The Tall Ships Races, which is expected to attract about a million visitors and up to 100 ships, comes to Hartlepool from August 7-10.
Licensees can also apply for a temporary notice to open for longer hours during the World Cup, which kicks off in June.
Mr Harrison told licensees: "It is possible to put one notice in, at a cost of 21, to open for up to 96 consecutive hours or to open and close when you want."
The licensing department at the council must be given at least 10 working days' notice, and they have asked for any licensee to submit applications for the Tall Ships Races before the end of June.
Mr Harrison added: "The police in particular need to plan, as there will be a huge amount of resources going into the managing of the event.
"If you put an application in before the end of June then we will do everything we can to work with you to try and allow that to go ahead.
"It may be that your licence stops at midnight and you want to open an extra couple of hours. A temporary event notice allows you to do that."
Landlords can also apply for a temporary event notice to put on activities that their licence doesn't currently allow for.
Mr Harrison stressed that it was important for licensees to work with neighbours and residents if they were planning to apply for a notice.
"The opportunity is there but it has to be reasonable," he said.
Licensees can apply for up to 12 temporary event notices between January and December, for a total of 15 days. Cleveland Police can object to the application.
