FIRE chiefs praised a quick-thinking family for their actions after their home went up in flames.
The family were in the house in Carlton Street, Hartlepool, when a blaze broke out in a bedroom.
The homeowner dialled 999 immediately and attempted to put the fire out, but when he realised it was spreading quickly, demanded all of the family go outside. Firefighters arrived just minutes later by which time fire was bellowing out of the bedroom window. Fortunately the fire officers from Stranton Station managed to put the blaze out before it spread throughout the house. The bedroom was destroyed and the first floor of the house was badly smoke damaged after the fire, which started at around 11am on Saturday.
Andy Robinson, watch manager, said: “Our advice to people is to never put themselves at risk.”
An investigation has been launched to determine how the fire started.
