YOUNGSTERS are being urged to cook up a treat after bosses unveiled a new kitchen area at a community centre.

Belle Vue Community Centre, in Kendal Road, Hartlepool, runs a youth club every Friday and Saturday night to keep young people off the streets.

Now youngsters can cook anything from baked potatoes to home-made pizzas in a new kitchen area created to help nurture their culinary skills.

Funded by Grant Givers, the kitchen has all modern appliances and fittings to encourage members to cook during the supervised sessions.

Aimed at young people aged between 14 and 19, the Belle Vue Youth Club runs a number of activities on a Friday between 8pm and 10pm and on a Saturday between 7pm and 9pm.

Youngsters can also take part in football and basketball sessions in the main hall, try their hand on the MC decks or show off their talent in the hair, beauty and dance studios. Entry to the club is 50p a session.

Youth club co-ordinator Trevor Robinson said: "The new kitchen facility offers a great opportunity for young people to learn new skills in cooking and each session will see them create new recipes.

"The youth club offers a warm and friendly atmosphere where young people can socialize with their friends and engage in activities they enjoy.

"It also keeps them away from hanging around on the streets and may potentially help to curb anti-social behaviour in the area on nights when there is not much to do."

The centre, which is celebrating 25 years since it opened its doors, was one of the first projects to be supported by Hartlepool New Deal for Communities scheme, with the development of a new sports hall, youth club facilities and conference rooms.
