Residents to be balloted over homes
COUNCIL housing tenants will be asked for their views on plans to transfer thousands of properties to a new landlord.
Consultation has started on the proposed transfer of 10,400 Stockton Borough Council homes to a new not-for-profit organisation, paving the way for 600million of improvements over the next 30 years.
During the coming months, the council, which covers Billingham and Wolviston, is to ballot all its housing tenants on whether it should transfer its housing stock to Tristar Homes.
The firm manages and maintains the homes on behalf of the council, but, under the proposals, the firm would be run by a board of directors made up equally of tenants, council representatives and independent members.
It would also seek charitable status, take on ownership of the houses and become the new landlord.
The council says the move would provide access to millions of pounds in new funding, which could be used to pay for double glazing, modern kitchens and bathrooms where they are needed.
A ballot on the changes is due to take place in May or June.
