DELUGE: The Burn Valley stream turned into a torrent following the overnight downpour.

A KEY route into Hartlepool remained closed throughout Sunday afternoon following heavy rain over the weekend.

The A689 at Wynyard was left flooded and traffic has been diverted throughout the day.

The road was due to reopen around 8pm.

The A1086 Coast Road through Blackhall was also partly closed on Sunday afternoon until around 5.30pm due to the downpours while fire crews were called to Front Street, in Wingate, to deal with flooding.

A section of the A19 near Hutton Henry was closed in the early hours after rainwater made the surface dangerous although that was reopened on Sunday morning.

Other roads are currently being assessed although most roads are now passable with care.

The weather updates are being monitored with more light rain expected from about 9pm and continuing overnight.

Heavy rain is expected from about 8am onwards on Monday morning.

Police are advising people to leave extra time for their journeys.

The latest flood warnings can be found on the Environment Agency website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk or by calling Floodline on 0845 988 1188.

Keep logging on for further updates.
