Sadistic thugs tortured victim

TWO sadistic thugs who tortured a vulnerable man are behind bars.

Karl Taylor, 26, and Ashley Sorby, 22, subjected their victim to a long and humiliating ordeal for their own sick pleasure, a court was told.

Teesside Crown Court heard the victim was left severely traumatised by the incident in which a pool cue was used.

Robin Turton, prosecuting, said: “This is a case of prolonged, sustained, basically torture of the victim culminating in an assault involving a pool cue. The incident humiliated the victim.”

Mr Turton said the motive of the assault with the pool cue was the pair’s “sadistic amusement”.

Taylor and Sorby both admitted joint charges of false imprisonment and grievous bodily harm at a court hearing yesterday.

They had originally been charged with the less serious offence of actual bodily harm. But that was upgraded by the Crown Prosecution Service because of the effect the incident had on the victim.

Mr Turton said he had “suffered profoundly” as a result of the ordeal.

A charge of causing the victim to engage in sexual activity was dropped.

Lawyers for Taylor and Sorby asked for sentencing to be adjourned to allow for the preparation of background reports.

Taylor, of Cornwall Street, Hartlepool, and Sorby, of Caithness Road, also Hartlepool, were remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Friday, March 9.

Judge Peter Fox, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, said: “You are both remanded further in custody, which will give the opportunity for a report to be prepared about you.”
