Safety scheme takes centre stage

AN innovative scheme using a touring theatre production to promote safety in the home will be launched next week.

Hartlepool, Stockton and Middlesbrough borough councils have joined forces to commission Yorkshire-based Performance in Education to stage a specially-written play.

The play, Captain Callie and the Adventures of Bola, will be performed in primary schools across the three boroughs.

More than 6,000 children in Hartlepool and around 20,000 across the Tees Valley are expected to see the show which is part of a drive to reduce childhood injuries and accidents.

The initiative has been prompted by statistics showing that 80 per cent of accident and emergency admissions are the result of accidents in the home.

Hartlepool Borough Council’s road safety officer Paul Watson, who is leading the initiative, said: “The overall aim of the scheme is to reduce preventable injuries in the home by highlighting how easily accidents, such as slips, trips, falls, scalds and burns, can occur.

“We hope to raise children’s awareness of dangers in the home.

“In turn, we hope that at the end of the school day, they will take this knowledge away with them and pass it on to their parents or carers.”

In the play, Captain Callie and Bola engage is a series of safe and unsafe practices in the home.

Through a mixture of character involvement and audience participation, dangers are identified.

The theatre performances will be backed up by curriculum-linked resources to enable further awareness-raising work to be carried out with pupils in class.

Children will also be given “homework” that will involve them carrying out their own home safety checks with the help of their parents or carers.
