THE snow has been gradually melting in Hartlepool - but one village school has been closed due to the cold snap.

The North-East is expected to continue to be hit by snow flurries today, but Hartlepool has escaped the icey weather as wintry showers turn to rain.

There is still snow on higher ground and surrounding areas and Trimdon Village Community Infant and Nursery School is closed today (Monday).

Motorists are also being warned of the possibility of black ice as the temperature will remain around freezing for the rest of the day and night.
