A SCHOOL headmaster is set to impress with his singing talents tonight when he rocks out to raise money for deprived African children.
Michael Lee, headteacher at English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College, in Hartlepool, will be joining fellow staff members on stage during the school’s Rock Night, which takes place tonight at Catcote Road from 6.30pm.
As well as providing a chance for students to show off their musical talents, their teachers and other staff members are also getting in on the act.
Mr Lee will be singing a version of folk heroes Lindisfarne’s 1970s hit Together Forever, as well as playing the guitar.
He said: “I will be playing solo, but am not nervous at all. It’s all for a good cause.”
The song will feature on a CD produced by the school’s staff and students called To Africa With Love, which has gone on sale to raise funds for English Martyrs’ partnership school in the Gambia, called Darsilami Upper Basic School.
The school has raised thousands of pounds in recent years through a fundraising campaign to help develop the school.
Also appearing on the CD is the school’s IT technician, who helped record the songs as well as singing a version of Seal’s A Kiss From A Rose.
The album was recorded in the school’s own recording studio.
The CD is on sale for £5 and all money raised will help send bikes to The Gambia to enable Gambian children to access school as otherwise they would face a six-mile round trip to walk to school.
Twenty students and six staff will deliver the bikes, shipped from Dover, when they visit Gambia on February 12.
During the trip students will work on joint curriculum projects with fellow students at
Darsilami school and English Martyrs’ staff will also teach while there.
The Hartlepool group will camp in the Gambia for a week at the Halahin Lodge in the village of Kartong.
