School date for cabinet meeting

PUPILS will be able to witness democracy in action when senior councillors hold a meeting at their school.

St Hild’s Church of England School is set to host a meeting of Hartlepool Borough Council’s cabinet committee within the next few weeks.

Mayor Stuart Drummond has agreed to take his cabinet committee to the school, in King Oswy Drive, to hear the results of different projects carried out by the pupils.

Youngsters will then be able to ask cabinet members questions before watching the proceedings of the rest of the cabinet agenda.

It is not the first time that the cabinet committee, which is chaired by Mayor Drummond, has held a meeting outside of the Civic Centre.

Meetings have previously been held at Hartlepool College of Further Education, Manor College of Technology and Dyke House Sports and Technology College.

Mayor Drummond said: “We have done similar things at other venues in town and they have always been quite successful.

“Each year we try and get out into the community and we aim at young people in particular as it gives them the chance to question the decision makers.

“This is a good chance for cabinet members to go into the community and to promote what we do.

“It helps show the younger generation that we are accountable to the decisions we take.

“This is a good exercise for everybody.”

As part of their citizenship work, students have been looking at a range of topics including parking problems in King Oswy Drive, reducing the voting age to 16, animal welfare issues and also staging a pop concert in Hartlepool.

The teenagers will present the findings of their work to the Mayor and cabinet members.

Mayor Drummond said: “It is a chance for the students to present the outcomes from their work and then to ask questions of the cabinet members.

“They will then be welcome to stay to hear the business on the agenda.”

Cabinet committee meetings are held once a fortnight on a Monday morning.

The cabinet meeting at St Hild’s School will be held on Monday, January 23, at 9.15am.
