Sculpture taking shape

A LASTING legacy of The Tall Ships Races is fast taking shape in Hartlepool.

An eye-catching ship sculpture in steel and glass is being created thanks to teamwork involving residents, schools and community groups.

They have spent months working on the sculpture with Hartlepool kiln glass artist Rachel Gretton.

The end product involves more than 350 pieces of glass which will be fixed to the ship's steel frame.

The ship is taking shape in All Aboard – the arts and information venue set up by Hartlepool Council's Cultural Services section on the first floor of Middleton Grange Shopping Centre.

She said: "The sculpture is a marvellous way for people to leave their mark on a sculpture which is being created to celebrate the town's heritage and commemorate the Tall Ships event."

The completed ship will be on display in All Aboard throughout the Tall Ships festivities.

The steel ship sculpture itself has been made by Hartlepool firm Foster & Laws and the project is also supported by Middleton Grange Shopping Centre.
