IT’S official – the best chips in the North-East can be found in Hartlepool.

Staff at Fish Face, a family-run chippy in Seaton Carew, can now proudly boast they have the best chippy chips in the region after beating off competition from hundreds of rivals.

Fish Face is frying high after winning the prestigious Choice Chip Awards title in the Potato Council competition, held to mark national Chip Week 2013, which is currently taking place.

The popular shop has been run by the Atkinson family since June 2011 and they were thrilled with their success having entered for the first time.

David Atkinson has been in the chip shop business for many years, supplying frying equipment and running a takeaway with wife Susan, 45.

They bought Fish Face takeaway and restaurant, putting son Dave and his partner Nicola Darely at the helm of the restaurant with other son Shane managing the restaurant business.

David said: “We know a thing or two about producing tasty chips.

“It’s all down to quality ingredients and equipment, having a top notch method and proper staff training – all of which we have at Fish Face.

“Having a new generation in the shop has been wonderful, bringing in new ideas such as entering these awards and ways of keeping in touch with customers, which has paid off.

“We’re delighted that customers took the time and effort to vote for our chips.”

More than 500 shops competed for 10 regional titles voted for by the public and organisers say loyal chip fans nominated in their thousands both online and through voting cards placed in participating shops.

Kate Cox, marketing manager for Potato Council, said: “Britain is truly a nation of chip lovers and Chip Week is a fantastic celebration of our great food tradition.

“This year’s Choice Chip Awards have been incredibly popular, with over 35,000 votes made by customers who were keen to give their favourite chips their stamp.”

Chip Week is now in its 22nd year and figures show a quarter of all potatoes grown in Britain are made into chips – around 1.5m tonnes each year.
