A RESTAURATEUR handed over £1,500 to the Hartlepool branch of the NSPCC – taking his fundraising tally for the charity to more than £25,000 in the last 14 years.

Krimo Bouabda, 59, organises raffle draws in his three Hartlepool restaurants every Christmas to raise cash for the local branch of the charity.

And every single year, without fail, his loyal customers back him by dipping into their pockets and supporting the cause.

This year was no different and a proud Krimo yesterday handed over £1,579 to the town’s delighted volunteers from the children’s charity.

Krimo, who runs Portofino, Casa del Mar and Krimo’s, all in Hartlepool, said: “It’s nice that this money is going to kids in Hartlepool.

“I think we have raised more than £25,000 now since we started and to be honest I wish we could do even more.

“But on the whole I’m very, very happy that we have raised as much as that.”

Remarkably this year’s total was raised in just three-and-a-half weeks and Krimo was quick to praise all of his customers who support his charity effort year on year.

NSPCC volunteers in Hartlepool revealed that the total raised by Krimo makes up about 20 per cent of donations the Hartlepool branch receives every year.

Jane Starling, treasurer of the charity’s Hartlepool branch, said: “It’s year after year, Krimo’s support is absolutely second to none.

“He does a lot of work for the children of Hartlepool and we are so grateful for every penny he has donated.”

The cash raised every year goes towards helping children in the town who are neglected, providing support as well as funding items such as food and new clothes.

Krimo, an Algerian-born businessman who moved to the UK 37 years ago yesterday and now lives in Hartlepool’s Bishop Cuthbert estate, said: “The winners of the raffle get vouchers for the restaurants, it’s nice to be able to ring them and let them know they have won, and nice for them to know they have helped to raise the money. We will carry on doing this for as long as we are here.”
