AUDIENCES are set for some respite from the gloomy weather and economic woes when a traditional pantomime comes to a local venue.
Blackhall Community Players are set to host their version of Jack and Jill.
A cast and production crew of around 40 have been busy preparing for the performances, at Blackhall Community Centre, in Hesleden Road.
Margaret Stephenson, the group’s wardrobe mistress, said: “It’s the classic tale of Jack and Jill went up the hill, but the water is magic, and of course, they spill it.
“The setting of the village of Arcadia is quite well-off, but after they spill the water, everything goes pear-shaped.
“But as usual, we have a happy ending.”
Margaret said the group’s pantomimes usually attract around 1,000 people over their five-day run.
Jack is played by Sandra Stevens and Angela Race plays Jill.
Margaret said there is a lot of laughter in the show, with big laughs provided by characters including Tommy Tittlemouse, played by Catherine Hall, bailiffs Fetch (Millie Tempest) and Carry (Allyson Allday) and Diva Discontent (Carole Scott).
Other characters include Aqua Fairy, played by Olivia Gelson, Marjorie Dawe, played by Francesca Hall, The Baron (Sue Vickers) and Peter The Gardener (Sarah Teasdale).
The show runs from Tuesday, January 22, to Saturday, January 26.
Weekday performances are at 7pm, with doors opening at 6.15pm, and Saturday’s matinee is at 2pm, with doors open at 1.15pm.
