SLIDESHOW: Stricken fishing boat gets sinking feeling

Waiting for Video...

THE stricken trawler which was beached at South Shields after colliding with the pier looked like she was sinking on Tuesday afternoon.

But appearances can be deceptive, and the fact the Grenaa Star is touching the sand below could save her from sinking completely.

The Hartlepool-registered fishing vessel struck the south Tyne Pier at about 6.30am, and immediately began taking on water.

Her skipper, despite being injured in the accident, managed to run the 46-tonne vessel aground at Little Haven Beach, South Shields.

He was taken to hospital for treatment to a head injury suffered in the collision.

Attempts to pump her out were abandoned after about three hours when it became clear they weren’t working, and the two remaining crew were taken to safety by Tynemouth RNLI.

The vessel was badly holed to the bow, and no attempt to move her is expected to be made until Wednesday.
